Here’s an adorable video of eight penguin chicks who are being hand-raised by experts at New York’s Central Park Zoo. Twelve of the world’s seventeen penguin species are facing serious population decline, so animal professionals have turned to foster parents to avoid extinction.

This featherless baby penguin that was born on August 17, 2011 at the Laohutan Pole Aquarium in Dalian, China, had to be adopted by staff of the aquarium after the sickly chick was rejected by its parents.

They reared the helpless hatchling with the help of some stuffed animals until it grew healthier and even sprouted some feathers. Not much later the adorable creature was re-introduced to its family group, who accepted him back into the fold.
